The Human Centipede 3 (Final Sequence) is a 2015 English-language Dutch satirical body horror film, written and directed by Tom Six. It is the third and final installment in the Human Centipede film trilogy. Starring Dieter Laser and Laurence R. Harvey, the leading actors from the first two films, in new roles, The Human Centipede 3 was released both theatrically and on video on demand on 22 May 2015. The film received predominantly negative reviews from critics.

Plot

Bully prison warden Bill Boss (Dieter Laser), leading a big state prison in the USA, has a lot of problems; his prison statistically has the highest amount of prison riots, medical costs and staff turnover in the country.

But foremost he is unable to get the respect he thinks he deserves from his inmates and the state Governor (Eric Roberts). He constantly fails in experimenting with different ideas for the ideal punishment to get the inmates in line, which drives him, together with the sizzling heat, completely insane. Under threats of termination by the Governor, his loyal right hand man Dwight (Laurence R. Harvey) comes up with a brilliant idea. A revolutionary idea which could change the American prison system for good and save billions of dollars. An idea based on the notorious Human Centipede movies, that will literally and figuratively get the inmates on their knees, creating the ultimate punishment and deterrent for anyone considering a life of crime. Having nothing to lose, Bill and Dwight create a jaw-dropping 500-person prison centipede.

References to previous films

  • Returning actors from the previous films include Dieter Laser, Laurence R. Harvey, Akihiro Kitamura, Peter Blankenstein, and Bill Hutchens.
  • The film starts in a similar manner to the beginning of Full Sequence, with the main character watching the previous movie just as it ends.
  • When forcing his secretary Daisy to give him a blowjob, Bill Boss shouts at her "swallow it bitch", which is what Josef Heiter said to Lindsay in First Sequence.
  • Bill Boss reads out how the surgical operation is going to be carried out, similar to how Heiter did in the first film. He also says that he will only explain the process once, which is what Josef Heiter said to Lindsay, Katsuro and Jenny. Boss uses a sedation rifle to put his victims to sleep, similar to Heiter.
  • A prisoner threatens to rape Bill Boss and Boss' parents with barbed wire wrapped around his penis. Martin Lomax carried out this act on the tail-end of his "centipede", Kim, in the second film.
  • In the film, Bill Boss exclaims "Eyes for eyes, teeth for teeth, times 100!" In First Sequence, Josef Heiter says "Eyes for eyes, teeth for teeth" when facing Katsuro in a conflict. Boss also exclaims that he hates human beings, just as Heiter expressed he disliked human beings.
  • Like Heiter, Boss kisses his reflection in a moment in which he is proud of himself.

Development

Tom Six and Dieter Laser

Tom Six managed to convince Dieter Laser to star in Final Sequence after creative differences.

In January 2013 it was reported that both Tom Six and Dieter Laser had settled their differences and Laser was back to continue working on the film, which was to begin filming in the spring of 2013. Both Dieter Laser and Laurence R. Harvey will return, this time playing completely different characters than the first two films. Tom Six will also have a supporting role in the film.

It carries the tagline 100% Politcally Incorrect.

Filming began in May 2013 in Los Angelas and latest plot details suggest it will take place in a prison, especially when Tom Six began a cast callout for men to play prisoners. It was announced Eric Roberts will be playing a role in the film.

On the 6 November 2013, Tom Six confirmed it would take place in a prison and showed off its first poster.

The first publicity shot for the film was released in March 2014, which showed Laurence R. Harvey and Dieter Laser as their new characters inside a prison, with prisoners behind bars flipping them off.

Reception

Box office

Box Office Mojo reports that Final Sequence made a domestic gross of $16,184 in its limited theatrical run.[9]

Critical

The Human Centipede 3 (Final Sequence) received generally negative reviews from film critics. Review aggravator Rotten Tomatoes surveyed that 19% of the 43 reviews listed were positive. The critics consensus reads "Human Centipede fans may find enough extreme body horror in the third installment to satisfy, but filmgoers of every other persuasion are strongly advised to stay far, far away from Final Sequence."[10] The film received a Metacritic rating of 5, indicating overwhelming dislike from 15 critics.[11]

James Rocchi of The Wrap gave the negative review, mocking the film's tagline and urging potential viewers "Don’t dare yourself to see The Human Centipede 3 because it's '100% Politically Incorrect,' as the poster brags; shun it instead because it's 100 percent boring."[12] Dennis Harvey of Variety also criticised the film, stating that "Tom Six's latest, largest-scaled and most lamentable entry yet in the gross-out horror series manages to be completely obnoxious even before the gross stuff kicks in."[13]

Katie Rife of A.V. Club opined that "Various clues throughout the movie point to satire—the penitentiary in question is the George H.W. Bush State Prison, for example, and Six seizes every opportunity for a Nazi reference he can find. But if the director is actually trying to make some kind of satirical point, and isn’t just using this as cover for charges that his movie is a racist, sexist piece of trash, it’s a dumb one."[14] Chris Nashawaty of Entertainment Weekly stated in his review that "[Tom] Six rubs the audience’s face in this filth like a third grader straining to shock. Don’t take the bait. Even by the series’ already low standards, The Human Centipede Part 3 is crap."[15]

Jeannette Catsoulis of the New York Times called Final Sequence "So much effort; so little entertainment."[16] Kim Newman of Empire gave the film a positive review, calling it "Violent, profane, scurrilous, obnoxious, hilarious-if-you’re-in-a-weird-mood and so self-aware it’s nearly beyond criticism, this fuses the shock tactics of avant-garde drama with ’70s exploitation. Like it or not, Six has contributed something fresh and demented to pop culture."[17]

Accolades

Award Category Nominee Result
36th Golden Raspberry Awards[18][19] "Worst Director" Tom Six Nominated
"Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel" The Human Centipede 3 (Final Sequence) Nominated

In January 2016, The Human Centipede 3 (Final Sequence) was nominated in the 36th Golden Raspberry Awards for the category of "Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel." Additionally, Tom Six received the nomination for "Worst Director" for his role in directing Final Sequence. Neither Tom Six nor the Final Sequence film won the award in their respective categories.[18][19][20] In response to the nominations, Tom Six proclaimed "If I win a Razzie, I will personally pick it up in LA and give the sickest acceptance speech ever."[21] Six went on to point out that the famed Stanley Kubrick was also nominated for "Worst Director" at one time.[22]

The film was named the second worst movie of 2015 by Entertainment Weekly, with the rationale being "Sleazy sadism served with a wink and a smile, Six’s anus-to-mouth trilogy is a satire without any clue of what it’s satirizing."[23] A.V. Club also named Final Sequence as the second worst film of 2015, analysing that "Writer-director Tom Six lives for disapproval, and he’s finally made a movie that basically no one—not even those amused or unnerved by the past two installments—could possibly enjoy."[24]

Tie ins

Laurence R. Harvey goes for an Audition is an official spin-off video meant to promote Final Sequence. It features Laurence R.
